Hello All. This is to announce and inform those as to the specifics surrounding the outcome of the AU meeting on thursday (oct. 11) and the subsequent scandalous blunder (never a dull moment).

To much of my surprise there was a flurry of attendance and a spirit of action amongst the participants. During the meeting I announced the potential to participate in the carnival of the great pumpkin on Oct. 23rd which I got from this link. Unfortunately the posting contains a critical typo which I did not catch.

AS A RESULT===> we are now signed up for a booth for the Carnival of the Great Pumpkin (at the expense of 25 dollars of club money).

once it was decided by the raucous members in the meeting that we wanted to participate, a discussion of our collective inability to handle hot dogs transpired until finally:

WE WILL BE MAKING MASKS FOR SALE and possibly some other crafty type activities as yet to be determined.

As a result==> There is scheduled a mask making workshop @ Kris O.'s House in Mission On SUNDAY (Oct. 14) starting @ NOON

DIRECTIONS: i am on the NW corner of two mile line and bryan rd. Entrance is the second driveway on the Left (west, directly across the street from mailboxes) when traveling north. Just south of the canal. Heavily wooded and no visible dwellings from the road.

This workshop will primarily feature elements of "papier mache" but all other creative elements are welcome (I have a wealth of crap to rummage through and tools to boot). I have procured 3 plastic masks to use as molds and a 5 lbs sack of high gluten flour for the making of a sticky paste (at an expense of 12 dollars to the club). I am however lacking in the newspaper area. PLEASE TO BRING NEWSPAPER IF IN ATTENDANCE.

The Carnival is scheduled for Friday Oct. 26th from 6 to 10pm. We will have a 10' x 10' booth and there is a cash prize for the best decorated booth. There are also additional gorry details surrounding involvement in the carnival of the great pumpkin. If interested please inquire or attend sunday, or next thursday.

ATTENDANCE AT WORKSHOP NOT REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION. YOU ARE WELCOMED AND ENCOURAGED TO MAKE MASKS ON YOUR OWN OR INVOLVE YOURSELF IN ANY CAPACITY.

THE PROBLEM THAT WAS ILLUMINATED DURING COMPOSITION OF THIS EMAIL IS AS SUCH:

I also announced that I will be having an art auction and show at my place friday the 26th and all were invited to attend and participate. Thus 23 turned to 26 and now there are two 26es in collision. As such I will not be in attendance at the carnival of the great pumpkin (i am not sure if this of consequence to anyone, but i digress). After having attended a painful risk management seminar, it is important that I make it clear that my party is NOT an officially recognized or supported Artists Unanimous event. You were merely invited under the guise of being a group of like-minded nice people. My plan thus far is to continue to hold the workshop and assist in the preparations for the booth while remaining true to my previous obligation of an art auction. I welcome and plead to anyone offering resolution to such a large blunder on my part. If you have input please reply to all so that a forum may grow.

As a cheery ender/aside:

The thrice iterated group project is still in swing. If you have not participated in 3 iterations a lacking piece is awaiting your masterful attention. Email me (artistsuanimous@gmail.com) for arrangements on receiving your deficiency.

a piece of primed mdf (medium density fiberboard) will be handed out to each attendant. The directions are to use the pallet for some artwork; any medium/subject. However you need not finish. Next meeting you will bring back the unfinished, but started piece. We will then randomly reassign the piece to someone else. Their task is to work with the piece in their own way with the given kernal. Finally we will randomly assign the twice worked piece to a final round of people and they will be laid the burden of finishing the piece. Theoretically a diligent participant will work on a piece at each stage.

if we are able to aggregate a group of successfully completed pieces we should like to show them.

Proposed summer project towards the collective exhibition at the premiere artwalk of the 07/08 art season.

DIORAMA!! (I define diorama as a little world. Perhaps think small theater set. My motivation for this project is to present to the willing participants an arena of confinement within which to fill to suit their expression. It may have a scale representation of actual items or it may be a to scale model of unactual items. Inbetweener too-also.)

With the following mandatory noticed suggestions:

1) to be a housed in a found object box (preferably rectangularish and closed on 5 sides for the purposes of orienting and display and continuity. Power cords out the back if you please.)

i.e. an old microwave, an old cigar box, an old tool box, an old tv box, an old speaker box, an old animal carcass (from a box shaped animal of course), etc…

2) there should be some sort of viewer interaction interface (clearly labeled to invite its use and to suggest its use alone, and NOT complete molestation of the entire piece. for the purposes of engagement.)

i.e. a switch that turns on a light, a switch that turns off a fan, a lever that lifts a deal, a button that buttons a fly, a pull cord that opens a door, a knob that opens a flap, a zipper that zips a zap, a push rod that delivers a god, etc…

I would like at some point this summer to have a workshop to make available my tools and spare parts for construction purposes and provide a social incentive (chips and dip) to produce work. Look for an invitation between Summer I and Summer II sessions (July 10th and there abouts). One should not wait for this event to get started. Below are two pictures of dioramas off the internet. Notice that they do not have an interactive element, and that they would be all the better if they did, and you should like to put such an element in your diorama. All comments, questions, suggestions welcomed.

At Douglas Clark’s Sculpture Studio, the space was organized to reflect that of an art expo rather than his usual working space. Various artists had booth-like spaces. UTPA’s Artists Unanimous Inaugural Juried Clay Expo was displayed in the front gallery area. The exhibit was organized by Chris Leonard and juried by James Miller. "Here are featured 19 artists who have in some way stepped into the realm of fantasy on one end and representational on the other, " said Miller. The works were by students and reflected that level of expertise.

On November 11th we will be venturing up the valley and across the border to the town of Guerrerro Veijo for the day.

Front Tamaulipas, Mexico

An ideal town which thrived for more than 200 years in Northern Mexico was left to wash away under a government program in 1953.

Guerero was founded in 1750 in the frontier state of Tamaulipas and was known internationally as a fine tourist resort by the early 1900s in an unlikely arid land. From far away European countries came visitors who admired the sculpted stone buildings, arched passageways and rose gardens defined by cemetric stone paths. Near an impressive church and popular central plaza, a hotel was built with thick concrete walls to keep guests cool on hot afternoons.

In this drought-prone land, water, crops and food matter more than pride and tourism, and the U.S. and Mexican governments devised a plan to bring the needed water to the steadily increasing population in the frontera region. The containment of the Rio Grande behind the dam of the International Falcon Reservoir called for the submersion of several towns in Tamaulipas and Texas. Along with residents in Zapata, Texas, the population of Guerrero was asked to move to higher ground. Most went sadly to their new homes in Nuevo Guerrero.

Even as water lapped at the sandstone foundations, a few old homesteaders refused to leave the magnificent town they built. Soon, only the peaks of the tallest buildings were visible.

Our Lady of RefugeAs the water subsided, due to years of drought, the ruins of Guerrero emerged. Most buildings were reduced to toppled walls resting in mud, as the sandstone foundations had washed out from under them. The facade of the church, Our Lady of Refuge, still remained, though the interior was gone. Faith brought several residents back to rebuild the church.

Most years, barely enough water falls on this region to keep it alive. Little of the water that drains into the Rio Grande in Colorado and New Mexico makes it this far South. During extreme dry spells the Pecos River doesn't even connect with the Rio Grande.

If sufficient rain returns and the government sees the opportunity to raise the level of the precious stored resource, Guerrero Viejo's faith may again be submerged beneath the lake.

Our Itinerary (tentative) is as follows:

8:00 am depart from the Art Department

9:45 am arrive at Falcon Dam crossing

10:15 am arrive Guerrero Viejo

12:00 am sack lunch at Guerrero Church

3:30 pm depart from Guerrero Viejo

5:45 pm arrive at Art Department - this time will vary depending on whether we stop for dinner as a group on the way back.

What you need to bring

$10 to contribute for gas. We may all be asked to pay a $1 or $2 to get into the area so have a little extra cash with you.
Guerrero Viejo is somewhat isolated so please be sure to bring
-lunch, snacks and WATER.
-Bring comfortable shoes, a camera and/or sketchbook or whatever you feel comfortable making art with on the move.

The theme of AU's January Art Walk Show at Douglas Clark will be "Impressions of Guerrerro Veijo" which will consist of work created or inspired by our trip. If you go on the trip, whether you are a member of AU or not, you are welcome to show work based on the trip at that time.

You can download a student travel form at this site. Please fill it out and turn it into Chris or myself by Friday. You can also slide it into my locker in the Art Annex - it has blue tape with my name Wendy Gilbert written on it. It must be returned by Friday or you will not be able to go with us on November 11.

It’s a clay show and here’s the deal: You must be a UTPA student (all majors welcome) and the work submitted must have been made here is our good old studios and fired is our good old kilns. Mixed media is OK if the primary medium is clay.

- A ceramic showing opportunity for you—we will use the space provided at Douglas Clark Gallery (front room off entrance) on Main, and the Ceramic Department pedestals. STC Ceramic instructor James Miller will be the juror and will select work for display. Each student may submit up to three (3) pieces

Installation is set for Friday, November 24 from 9a-11a. Work will need to be delivered to the UTPA Ceramics Studio on November 20, 21 or 22. The show will run through Saturday, January 6, 2007 when it will be disinstalled. Work will be returned to the UTPA Ceramics Studio for pickup.

The type of work for the show would best be described as that which fits loosely or tightly into the season of Christmas: Material choice is up to you but it must be a) suitable for a public setting and b) presented in a format that is ready to hang on the wall. Work must either be able to be safely affixed to the wall or possibly even be suspended from the ceiling.

The Brownsville Museum of Fine Arts is accepting entries for their 36th International Art Show. The Best in Show will win $1,000. December 1st is the deadline for slides to be sent in. The entry cost is $45 for up to 3 slides.

Group Project! Reminder

We'll be meeting ~~Saturday at noon~~ Saturday September 16th* in the UTPA Art Annex ceramics room to make bowls for the RGV Empty Bowls Project.If you don't know how to throw on a wheel, bring a bowl with you that you can use as a mold. We'll be there for about 3 hours.

*The date has changed because Chris Leonard will have the ceramics room open to host bowl making for Empty Bowls from 8a-5p. There will also be people there from the RGV Food Bank. As a group we plan to be there at noon. That way we can work together and get some good group photos.

We will meet again at a later date to glaze them.

Be prepared to get dirty! ;)

Below is information about the event from the RGV Foodbank:

Empty Bowls (www.emptybowls.net) with its unique showcase of local cuisine and art is slated for October 19 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. We are so happy and excited. This season, University of Texas Brownsville President Dr. Juliet Garcia has offered to host this spectacular event at Jacob Brown Auditorium.

It is such a simple idea, but it builds partnerships, community and helps feed the hungry. Local students and artists create and donate small cereal-size bowls (usually ceramic and useable for eating--but most media is welcome). Larger bowls and art pieces have been used for a silent auction in the past. Local chefs, restaurants and food distributors donate a simple meal of soup, salad, drinks and dessert. Tickets are sold and guests enjoy a meal with many choices of soup, salad and dessert entrées to sample. The highlight of the event is that each ticket is good for one selection of an amazing array of original art, a bowl that will remind each person that there are always Empty Bowls in the Rio Grande Valley.

We are, like most non-profits, limited on staff and help. We also know we will need help from community members who care about meeting the basic needs of the hungry in our Valley. Committee members are sought to help with all aspects of this event.
The event benefits the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley, Inc.

The deadline for turning in donations is October 9th.

HESTEC Outdoor Sculpture Art Competition

This competition is open to all currently enrolled UTPA students. The purpose of the contest is to promote HESTEC's fifth year anniversary celebration to our community. Students are encouraged to create and build a 3-D sculpture out of a material of their choice excluding glass and within the weight limit of 20-45 pounds. The sculpture may include photocopies, magazine cutouts, pain, or anything that will enhance the appearance and portray what HESTEC represents (e.g. science tools, space items such as stars, planets, community involvement, people, etc.)

Prizes: Grande Prize-$1000, Second Place-$500, Third Place-$250, Fourth Place: HESTEC Gift Package

Our goal in Artists Unanimous is to strengthen the bond between students at UTPA and the world of art. We hope to include, not just art students, but also those outside the field of art. Some activities we will be sponsoring are community art exhibits, field trips to museums, and workshops with professional artists. We also plan to participate in the Art Walk, the first Friday of every month which takes people from exhibit to exhibit in McAllen.

This organization will also:
- promote awareness of art related events on campus and in the community
- provide students an opportunity to exhibit their work
- notify students of scholarships and grants that art students may be eligible for

Article I. Name of Organization

Artists Unanimous

Article II. Statement of Purpose

A. To provide opportunity for Art and Art related students to exhibit work in school and throughout the community.
B. The organization hopes to enrich students with a broad knowledge of art
and help structure the network between students at The University of
Texas-Pan American and the world of art.

Article III. Membership Requirements

I. Open Membership Provision

A. Membership is open to students, faculty, and staff of the University of
Texas- Pan American regardless of race, national origin, political affiliation, sex, creed or religion, age, disability, sexual orientation,
veteran’s status or weight.
B. Members can be of any major and any classification.
C. Majority of members must be enrolled students.

II. Founders

Founders are those first 3 students who submit the paperwork to the Office of Student Development necessary to establish Artists Unanimous as a
temporary organization.

III. Expulsion

A. Members may be expelled by a ¾ vote of the membership only with just
cause. Just cause for particular situations will be determined by the
Judicial Committee.
B. Every Member who is up for expulsion must be given due process; an
opportunity to present his case, rebut accusations, conduct an investigation,
and appeal any decisions made against the member.

Article IV. Officer and Executive Board Requirements

A. The following officers will serve as the Executive Board: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Historian.

B. Each officer will serve one calendar-year term starting on the date of
election, except those elected in a vote specifying some other period
of time.

C. Only active members enrolled in the University can hold office.

D. Officer Duties

1. President
a. The President will serve as the titular and
functional head of the organization.
b. Calls and Presides over meetings.
c. Form ad hoc committees with a membership of
his/her own choosing from among the active members.
d. Supervises all special events and activities.
e. Nominates active members to the standing committees.
f. Exercises supervisory control over all organizational
activities.
g. Able to deposit and withdraw funds at the organization’s
bank.

2. Vice President
a. The Vice-President will serve as the titular and functional
head of the organization in case the President is absent.
b. Serves out the President’s term in case the
President is removed or resigns from office.

3. Secretary
a. Organizes all files.
b. Takes minutes at meetings.
c. Maintains a scrapbook of all organizational activities.
d. Oversees the organizational website and newsletter.
e. Generates membership status reports.
f. Coordinates the organization’s mail and internet
communication.
g. Ensures that all required forms are submitted to the
University.

4. Treasurer
a. Submits semester financial reports to the Executive Board.
b. Manages all organizational funds at fundraisers and other
special activities.
c. Shares responsibility of depositing and withdrawing funds at
the organization’s bank.

5. Historian
a. Manages all historical records relating to the organization and
its activities.
b. Functions as the reporter and publicist for the organization.
c. Creates an annual yearbook about the organization’s
activities.

F. Removal of Officers

1. Officers may be removed by a ¾ vote of the membership only with
just cause. Just cause for particular situations will be determined by
the Judicial Committee.
2. Every officer who is up for removal must be given due process; an opportunity to represent his case, rebut accusations, conduct an investigation, and appeal any decisions made against him.

Article V. Advisors

A. The organization will have two advisors who must be full-time employees
at the University of Texas-Pan American.
B. At least one advisor must be a professor of Art at the University.
C. Duties of the Official Advisors
1. The advisors will counsel the organization on all activities.
2. Review all reports submitted to the Office of Student
Development.
3. Approve the semiannual financial reports generated by the
Treasurer.
4. Shares authority to deposit and withdraw funds at the
organization’s bank.

Article VI. Meeting Structure

A. Meetings will be held at least once a month during the calendar year as
feasible, except in the months of May, June, July, August, and December.
B. Meetings will be announced through e-mail and telephone at least 24 hours
in advance.
C. Meetings may be called by the President or a majority vote of the Executive Board.
D. Quorum: A majority of active membership will constitute a quorum. No official business may be transacted without a quorum.

Article VII. Dues

Dues, set by the Founders in the first semester of the organization’s existence and thereafter modifiable through a 2/3 vote of the membership.

Article VIII. Committees

A. General Committee Structure
1. All committee decisions will be effective with a simple majority
vote.
2. All committees may be comprised of up to 5 members.
3. Committee members will be nominated and appointed by the
Executive Board.
4. Committee member terms are one calendar year starting on the date
of appointment.

B. Standing Committees
1. Judicial Committee
a. Hears all grievances and motions for removal or expulsion.
b. Sets the dates for all hearings, trials, and related activities.
c. Maintains impartiality for all judicial procedures.

2. Events Committee
a. Proposes, plans, and implements organization events and activities.
b. Publicizes all organizational activities.

3. Career Committee
a. Gathers and distributes materials on opportunities for career advancement in art.
b. gathers and presents research on topics of interest in art.

C. Ad Hoc Committees
1. Ad hoc committees will be appointed from among the membership as needed for a specified period of time by the President or a simple majority vote of the Executive Board.
2. Ad hoc committees may become standing committees
through a 2/3 majority vote of the membership.

Article IX. Elections

I. General Procedure
A. Elections may be called by a majority vote of the Executive Board
or by a 2/3 vote of the membership at a meeting at least two weeks before the election will take place.
B. Voting will be by secret ballot.
C. Absentee voting is allowed. The rules for such voting will be set by the Executive Board at each election.
D. Only enrolled students may vote.

II. Executive Board Elections
A. An active member may place himself on the election ballot by making his intention to run known to the Secretary at the meeting calling for an
election or within the deadline set by the active membership at that meeting.
B. Executive board elections will occur no later than two meetings after a
meeting calling for an election in either March, April, or September
of each year.
C. Officers must secure a majority vote to be elected.

Article X. Method To Amend The Constitution

A. Amendments to this constitution may be made by a ¾ majority vote of the active membership.
B. Any proposed amendments to this constitution must be announced at a
meeting at least two weeks prior to any vote for ratification.
C. Amendments must be approved by the Committee on Student
Organizations.
